Amodei called for a pause, and the market picked sides

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a weekend essay arguing AI developers must slow the pace of capability gains, and OpenAI's Sam Altman agreed — markets read it as bearish for the AI buildout and bullish for security spending, sending Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom down 3 to 5% while CrowdStrike, Zscaler, Palo Alto and Okta rose 11 to 12%. Saudi Arabia's pipeline around the closed Strait of Hormuz is now expected to be down three to five weeks after last Thursday's drone strike. Oracle's post-earnings round trip finished below where it opened before it reported, and the curve barely moved two days out from the Fed.

Amodei's essay flipped AI's own trade

chips −3 to −5% · security +11-12%

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published "We Must Pace the Frontier" over the weekend, arguing developers must slow the pace of capability gains so safety work can keep up. OpenAI's Sam Altman agreed and said OpenAI would adopt the same third-party-evaluator step Amodei proposed. Markets read it as bearish for the AI buildout and bullish for security spend: CrowdStrike and Zscaler up 12%, Palo Alto 11%, Okta 12%, against Nvidia down 3.4%, AMD 4.4%, Broadcom 4.8% and Micron 5.3%. The names tied most directly to datacenter capex fell harder still — Corning down 13.7%, Teradyne 13.3%, HPE 10.8%. The pure-play security stocks ran well ahead of their own sector ETF, CIBR, which rose just 4% — a rotation on sentiment, not on anything the companies themselves said today.

Saudi's Hormuz bypass is down for weeks, not days

WTI +1.2% · Brent +0.8%

The East-West pipeline — 1,200km, Saudi Arabia's main route around the closed Strait of Hormuz, moving 2.6 to 4 million barrels a day since late August — was drone-struck by Iran-backed militias in Iraq last Thursday. Regional officials told the AP repairs will take three to five weeks. Saudi output is already down from roughly 10 million barrels a day a year ago to 6 million in August. WTI settled up 1.2% near $101.22, Brent up 0.8% near $105.49.

The curve barely moved with the Fed two days out

2-yr +2bp · hike odds ~86%

The two-year rose 2bp to 4.65%, the five 2bp, the ten 1bp, the thirty fell 1bp — a quiet pause rather than a pre-position ahead of Wednesday's decision. CME FedWatch odds of a hike sit near 86%, little changed from Friday's 86.7%.

Oracle's round trip is complete

ORCL −3.7%

Wednesday's post-earnings intraday high was $165.90. Today's close is $144.79 — down 3.65% on the day and 12.72% off that high in four sessions, below even where the stock opened Wednesday, before it reported. The $664bn backlog number is fully priced back out.
